KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday extended the protective bail of former Sindh chief minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah till 19 June in a case relating to embezzlement in Malir Development Authority (MDA) land allotted to construct low-cost houses.

An SHC bench heard the bail plea of ex-CM Shah, who appeared before it and extended the protective bail till 19 June.

As the hearing went underway, the court inquired that “who was the beneficiary of the government land which was illegally allotted by Shah?” To which the defence counsel replied that nobody benefited from that land.

Upon which the bench observed that how it could be possible that the “state-owned land was illegitimately allotted and no one could gain benefit”. Defence informed the bench that allotment was cancelled later on.

The bench then remarked, “It is good that allotted land was cancelled but let us know that on whose name land was allotted.”

The bench asked the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Investigation Officer (IO) to continue inquiry into the case and bring realities before the court. The court, later, adjourned the hearing till 19 June.
