KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) has issued notices to Deputy Inspector General Traffic Police and Motorway Police Officer to explain what measures have been taken for removal of low quality gas cylinders from public transport vehicles.
A division bench headed by Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abassi had taken up a petition filed by United Human Rights Commission of Pakistan seeking removal of substandard gas cylinders and CNG kits from public and private transport.
Rana Faizul Hassan representing Rights body submitted several people had lost their lives due to use of substandard gas cylinders in public transport, but authorities concerned failed taking any action against such traffic violations.
He said authorities had failed to implement court’s order regarding removal of substandard gas cylinders and CNG kits after lapse of more than a year.
He pleaded court to order removal of substandard cylinders and government-verified cylinders/CNG kits used by public and private transport to avoid accidents.
Earlier, bench had observed time and again it had issued directives for removal of substandard gas cylinders and CNG kits but no positive steps appeared to have been taken by the provincial authorities.
It directed provincial transport authorities and DIG traffic to take measures in this regard and submit compliance report within one month.
28 proposed laws prepared for upcoming transport policy: Component Manager Component Implementation Unit (CIU) Sindh Yar Mohammed said 28 proposed laws have been prepared by holding several consultative workshops by transport and mass transit department, which would be presented for formation of Sindh Urban Transport Policy.
By following rules and bylaws the transportation safety and security could be improved in current scenario, he said addressing 3rd Consultative Workshop on Principle Guidelines on Sindh Urban Transport Policy.
Prof Dr Raza Mehdi of NED University delivered presentation on the current conditions keeping in view the recent incidents and threats to educational institutes. He showed a comparison of schools in Karachi with schools of other cities of the country.
