SHC issues notices to Customs in LED cases for 23rd

KARACHI: A Sindh High Court’s bench has issued notices to the Customs officials in a number of identical petitions filed by importers of LED lights whose consignments were detained at the Karachi port.

The bench, comprising Justice Munib Akhtar and Justice Omar Siyal, heard initial arguments by the counsel for the petitioners who maintained that concession was denied to the importers/petitioners with mala fide intention while the court has ordered release of dozens of consignments in a number of identical petitions.

The bench later ordered issuance of notices to the respondents for Oct 23 when other identical petitions are fixed for a hearing. The importers are seeking release of the consignment of LED lights on ground that LED lights are not manufactured in the country and the Alternate Energy Board has also allowed concessionary rates.
