SHC orders Port Qasim to assess tax on engine and alternator separately

KARACHI: Disposing of a constitutional petition, a divisional bench of the Sindh High Court (SHC) has ordered the Model Customs Collectorate of Port Qasim to release import consignment of old and used diesel engines and alternators as separate parts, not as a generator.

According to details, importer Muhammad Sultan Tippu had imported a consignment, comprising a number of diesel engines and alternators and filed a goods declaration.

During the examination, the customs authorities concluded that the old and used diesel engines and alternators were part of one machinery, but at the time of shipment from Germany the two were detached because when put together the two parts transform into a generator which is subject to a much higher rate of duty than that imposed on the two parts separately.
