SHC orders release of toiler soap consignment

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court has ordered release of a toilet soap consignment imported by petitioner Zaki Industrial Corporation.

An SHC appellate bench, comprising Justice Munib Akhtar and Justice Yousuf Ali Sayeed, earlier heard Ghulamullah Advocate of Franklin Law Associates representing the petitioner corporation who maintained that despite the existence of Valuation Ruling, respondent Director Valuation without any lawful authority has ordered determination of customs duty and other taxes at enhanced rate of US $ 920 while according to VR 863 0f 2013, the value is US $ 660 per metric tonne.

The counsel to a query by the court said that importer declared the value lesser than determined in VR 863/2016 as prices of the item imported has fallen in the international market.

The bench after hearing the sides ordered release of the consignment directing the petitioner to deposit differential amount between declared value and value under relevant Valuation Ruling with the Nazir of the court.

The bench also heard another petition filed by Aslam Traders issued notices to the Director Custom Valuation and other respondents for July 13 (Thursday).
