Sindh bans wheat import from other provinces, starts crackdown on hoarders

KARACHI: The Sindh government has imposed ban on the transportation of wheat from other provinces and decided to start crackdown against wheat hoarders immediately. The Sindh government has also decided to request the Federal Government for imposition of ban on import of wheat.

This was decided in the meeting held here Wednesday to review the market mechanism especially with reference to wheat, quality and prices of flour and impact of the subsidy of Rs 4.6 billion to the people of Sindh. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah presiding over the meeting said “We are getting good production of wheat and other crops because of grower’s friendly policies, now the province was not only self-sufficient in wheat production but enabled to export it”.

He formed 3-member committee comprising Minister Health Jam Mehtab Dahar, Minister Finance Syed Murad Ali Shah and Secretary Food Saeed Awan to conduct study to formulate Multi dimensional market mechanism to create demand for wheat, and explore new avenues for its export. The Chief Minister while expressing his apprehensions over the report about the sale of sub standard flour in local markets has directed the Commissioner/ Deputy Commissioners to take action against those who are marketing such flour at the cost of public health. Taking notice of hoarding and illegal transportation of wheat he directed the districts administration to ensure strict implementation of ban on movement of wheat within their jurisdiction and take severe action against violators.
