SINGAPORE: Throughout tax season the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provides free self-service tax assistance to qualified active duty service members, retirees and their dependents. VITA Site Managers have assisted Singapore Area Coordinator (SAC) personnel in the past with utilizing this free financial resource; however, this tax season the service will no longer be offered in accordance with Navy Legal Service Command (NLSC) policy. NLCS policy concerning installation VITA services mandates that a certain level of member participation must be maintained in order for a command to offer VITA Site Manager assistance,” said Legalman 1st Class Rebecca Duclayan, staff Legalman. “Over the last several years, we have not had the levels of participation necessary to maintain the service, and will therefore not be providing VITA service counseling at SAC during the 2018 tax season.”
In place of VITA Site Manager assistance SAC community members seeking aid in filing their tax returns are encouraged to utilize the free income tax filing system provided through Military OneSource, which consists of the same program VITA Site Managers have used in the past when providing tax assistance.
Military OneSource’s free tax services provide easy-to-use software that is designed specifically for the military community,” said Duclayan. “Military OneSource offers practical articles and guidelines on what you need to do to file a successful return, helping military members and their families take command of their taxes and develop the skills to become the best guardians of their family’s finances.”
