SINGAPORE: Authorities have seized sleeping pills, an electronic cigarette and e-cigarette accessories from a Singapore-registered car at Woodlands Checkpoint, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and Health Sciences Authority (HSA) said in a joint media release on Wednesday.
At about 2am on Tuesday, ICA officers directed a Singapore-registered car for routine checks when it arrived at Woodlands Checkpoint. They found five bundles of sleeping pills wrapped in newspaper hidden in the vehicle’s rear side panel. More pills were found in the 38-year-old driver’s waist pouch.
The seized pills included 5,000 Midazolam tablets, 26 Alprazolam tablets and 15 unknown white-coloured tablets. ICA officers also seized an e-cigarette, as well as e-cigarette accessories, which were found under the driver’s seat.
The Singaporean man is currently assisting HSA with investigations.
Unlicensed dealers involved in the import and supply of Midazolam and Alprazolam face a maximum fine of S$10,000 and/or up to two years in prison under the Poisons Act. They face a fine of up to S$5,000 and/or up to two years in jail under the Medicines Act as well.
The import, distribution, sale or offer for sale of e-cigarettes is banned in Singapore. Those convicted for the offence face a fine of up to S$5,000 for the first offence and a fine of up to S$10,000 for the second or subsequent offence for each count.
