SINGAPORE: The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority was nabbed two Malaysian drivers while attempting to smuggle 7,999 cartons of contraband cigarettes into Singapore, via land checkpoints in Tuas and Woodlands.
In a statement, the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said here the other day, the first case occurred at 4.15pm on Feb 22, when a 32-year-old man underwent a routine check by ICA officers at the Tuas Checkpoint.
He was driving a Malaysia-registered lorry declared to be transporting consignments of garments and thermal paper.
During inspection, ICA officers stumbled on cartons of cigarettes for which duty was not paid.
Subsequently, more contraband cigarettes were found packed in boxes in the vehicle, bringing the total value of the cigarettes whose duty was unpaid to S$533,000 (RM1.36 million).
