SINGAPORE: More than 3,000 cartons of contraband cigarettes were seized at Jurong Port on Wednesday from a lorry carrying plasticware, an Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) statement said today.
The lorry had been driven by a 57-year-old Singaporean man. ICA officers had directed the driver to Jurong Scanning Station for radiographic scanning, after they stopped the vehicle for checks at the Jurong Port main gate at about 5.10pm.
At Jurong Scanning Station, ICA officers observed anomalies in the scanned images. The contraband cigarettes, which had potential duty and Goods and Services Tax (GST) of about S$284,800 and S$25,890 respectively, were subsequently found and seized.
The driver, plasticware consignment, contraband cigarettes and lorry were handed over to Singapore Customs for investigations. The vehicle used in the offence may be forfeited, the ICA said.
