SEJONG: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said that some 36-hundred eggs weighing 200 kilograms arrived from Spain in South Korea on Wednesday afternoon as part of efforts to ease the egg shortage due to the bird flu outbreak.
The ministry explained that like South Korean eggs, the Spanish eggs have brown shells. The eggs are expected to hit shelves after the Lunar New Year holidays, which will end next Monday, given that it takes up to eight days for inspection and sanitary tests to be completed.
A ministry official said the government currently has no plans to import more eggs from other countries.
Since a batch of sample eggs from the U.S. arrived in the nation on January 12th, South Korea has imported 471 tons of U.S. eggs as of Thursday.
