LAHORE: The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (Smeda), in collaboration with Training and Development Centres of the Bavarian Employers Association (bfz) gGmbH, Germany and various trade associations have launched project ‘Espire’ to implement Energy Managements System (EnMS) in member mills of the associations.
According to a statement, 98 SMEs have successfully availed services related to energy efficiency and realised meaningful improvement as regard of energy consumption via the collaboration.
Smeda spokesperson said that the bfz has developed self assessment tools to enable the SMEs to calculate both energy performance and energy saving potential of various equipments installed on their production floors.
These self assessment tools are developed for pumping systems, boiler and steam systems, motors, compressed air systems, and electrical energy mix.
Furthermore, an Energy Management Maturity Matrix based on performance levels defined in accordance with the EnMS ISO 50001, has also been provided for SMEs to assess their current level and to identify areas where further development and consideration is required.
Maximum Demand Indicator (MDI) tool was developed to enable SMEs to investigate the opportunity of reducing the MDI of their company by impro¬ving load management of utilities and processes at shift start-ups and/ or while connecting to grid power supply.
After successful development of Self Assessment Tools, five awareness sessions were organised in Karachi and Lahore by bfz gGmbH jointly with Smeda and trade associations, including Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PHMA), Towel Manufacturers Association (TMA), Pakistan Association of Automotive Parts and Accessories Manufacturers (Paapam) for dissemination of these tools at a wider level.
Susanne Ditter, Project Coordinator of Bfz gGmbH emphasised on the role of Smeda and other associations in promoting the energy efficiency initiatives, particularly after closure of Project Espire in May 2016. She requested associations to encourage their member companies to use these tools and provide their feedback.
