Smuggling flourishes in Multan & Southern Punjab again

MULTAN: Despite frequent assurances from authorities that smuggling activities in Multan and surrounding areas of Southern Punjab are under control, reports indicate an alarming rise in illicit trade. Rather than slowing down, smuggling syndicates have evolved, shifting their operations to online platforms such as WhatsApp and other encrypted messaging apps, which has led to a significant increase in the flow of contraband goods.

While the Customs Collectorate Enforcement Multan continues to claim that smuggling has been eradicated in the region, the reality on the ground tells a very different story.

Far from being halted, smuggling activities have escalated, with non-customs paid goods and edible items being smuggled through official routes and sold openly through digital channels, making it more difficult for authorities to track and intercept illicit shipments.

This situation emerges at a time when the military has also touted its efforts to combat smuggling at the borders.

However, the shift in smuggling tactics has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of these high-profile claims. Smuggling syndicates are increasingly using encrypted platforms for conducting their illegal trade, circumventing traditional border checks and customs enforcement mechanisms.

This adaptation has led to a surge in both the volume and range of goods being smuggled, including common consumables that were previously harder to access illegally.
