Customs Court grants physical remand of suspect involved in smuggling of 34 tons poppy seed

KARACHI: The Special Custom and Taxation Court on Tuesday remanded a suspect involved in the smuggling of 34 tons of poppy seed to the custody of Customs investigation officer.

Farhatullah Jafri, investigation officer produced the accused – Muhammad Hafeez, a clearing agent, before the Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi, requesting him to remand the accused to his custody for interrogation. While granting his request the court remanded the accused till August 24.

According to the prosecution, the Directorate General of Customs Intelligence and Investigation had seized around 34 tons of poppy seed from two containers on August 11. The poppy seed was being smuggled to Malaysia under the garb of sea salt from Karachi Port.

Subsequently an FIR was registered against Asif Malik, Syed Hassan Ali and Muhammad Hafeez. Two accused were already in the custody of customs investigation officer on physical-remand till August 20.
