Sony advises Vaio laptop users to not make switch to Windows 10 Just Yet

TOKYO: If you use a Sony Vaio laptop, you might not want to upgrade to Windows 10 just yet. The Japanese technology giant is advising Vaio laptop users to not make the switch yet, as it doesn’t have the drivers to support the new desktop operating system.

The company says that Vaio laptops that shipped preinstalled with Windows 8.1 will have their drivers ready by October 2015, whereas the laptops that shipped with Windows 8 preinstalled will have to wait until November 2015.

The announcement may confuse many as Sony doesn’t make laptops anymore. The company announced last February that it was selling its PC division Vaio to a Japanese investment fund. But as part of the agreement, Sony still provides support to Vaio laptops.

Sony says that it is testing new drivers for supported models “as quickly as possible,” but until it makes them available, users are urged to not install Windows 10. “We are testing supported models and will be providing the results as quickly as possible,” it added.

“We plan to release Windows 10 upgrade information and, for Windows 8 and 8.1 models, drivers, applications and detailed information on the schedule below based on the operating system originally installed on the PC.”

But what about Vaio laptops that shipped with Windows 7 preinstalled? Sony doesn’t say exactly what it plans to do with them. The company notes that it is committed to deliver “information regarding limitations and issues” for the said devices sometime later this August. That doesn’t sound promising at all. It would be a shame if the company fails to provide Windows 7-powered Vaio laptops an upgrade to Windows 10, as according to Microsoft, they are also eligible for the free upgrade.
