CAPE TOWN: Imports of cold-rolled steel products, particularly from China, are hurting South African producers, initial findings from a local trade agency showed earlier this week, potentially paving the way for import duties.
The International Trade Administration of South Africa launched an investigation in July into whether to impose safeguard duties on imports of cold-rolled steel from a number of countries including China. South Africa had previously said it is considering imposing emergency tariffs on some iron and steel imports in a filing to the World Trade Organization.
