SEOUL: South Korean imports of Norwegian mackerel increased by 73% in the first six months of the year compared to the same period in 2015, reports Yonhap News. This comes after South Korea banned mackerel fishing in its waters for a month during the first six months of the year.
South Korea imported 10,751 metric tons of mackerel from Norway in the January-June period, compared with 6,199t during the same period last year, according to data from the Norwegian Seafood Council. South Korea caught 28,687t of mackerel in the first five months of this year, down 40.4% from a year earlier. The decline appears to be due to a month-long ban on catches of mackerel during the first half of the year.
