MADRID: The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment and the Chinese administration have officially signed a protocol that will allow EU countries export peaches, nectarines, prunes other stone fruits to China.

According to Alimarket.es, Spain will now become the first European Union country capable of exporting certain stone fruits to this attractive market.

For some organizations such as Afrucat, the opening of this market is of key strategic importance, because, as explained by its director Manuel Simón, it comes at a crucial time as the Russian market remains closed for the third year in a row.

Now Chinese inspectors will visit Spain, where they’ll check the farms and factories that registered with the ministry a few months ago.

The visit is due for late May or early June, so Fepex estimates the first Spanish exports could begin this season, presumably by air.

However, Afrucat is emphasizing the importance of choosing the right varieties for export, because China is a very distant market, with 28 days of transit and a few more in customs.
