Spain’s foreign tourism spending increases by 4.3 pct in April

MADRID: Foreign tourists spent a total of 5.647 billion euros (6.437 billion U.S. dollars) in Spain in April, which meant a 4.3 percent increase on a year-on-year basis, Spain’s Statistical Office (INE) said Monday.

The INE said that the average spending per tourist and visit stood at 927 euros, which meant a 6.2 percent fall year-on-year, while the average daily spending stood at 129 euros, 1.7 percent more than in April 2015.

The INE also said that in the first four months of the year foreign tourists spent 17.9 billion euros, which meant a 6.4 percent increase when compared with the same period of a year earlier.

In April, tourists arriving from Britain spent 1.134 billion euros, marking a 14 percent increase on a year-on-year basis.

They were followed by German tourists, who spent 823 million euros, and French tourists, who spent 604 million euros, meaning a 3 percent and a 5.1 percent rise respectively when compared with the same month of a year earlier.

The northeastern region of Catalonia received the largest amount of spending, 1.230 million euros, which accounted for 21.8 percent of the total.

It was followed by the archipelago of the Canary Islands and southern region of Andalusia that received 1.128 million euros and 1.024 million euros respectively, accounting for 20 percent and 18.1 percent of the total. (1 euro = 1.14 U.S. dollars)
