Spain’s housing sales increase by 23.6 pct in May

MADRID: Spain’s housing sales increased by 23.6 percent in May when compared with the same month of a year earlier, according to data released on Friday by Spain’s Statistical Office (INE).

The growth rate is lower than that of April, when housing sales increased by 29 percent year-on-year. Spain’s housing sales have been rising for four consecutive month year-on-year.

The INE reported that 36,425 deals were registered in May, with sales of second-hand houses increasing by 26.7 percent to 29,422 purchases and sales of new houses rising by 12 percent to 7,003 purchases.

About 89.3 percent of purchases were non-subsidized houses, whose sales rose by 22.7 percent in May year-on-year to 32,512 purchases, while 10.7 percent of purchases were subsidized houses, whose sales rose by 31.7 percent to 3,913 purchases.

Meanwhile, the INE also reported that in the first five months of the year housing sales increased by 15.8 percent when compared with the same period of a year earlier, with sales of second-hand houses rising by 21.9 percent and sales of new houses falling by 3.4 percent.
