MADRID: Spain’s vehicle production rose by 13.7 percent year-on-year in 2015 to 2,733,201 units, the Association of Car Manufacturers (ANFAC) reported Wednesday.

The rise meant that 133,000 more vehicles were produced in 2015 when compared with 2014. According to ANFAC, these figures had not been reached since the crisis “when in 2007 a total of 2.9 million vehicles were manufactured.”

In December alone, the sector produced 181,512 vehicles which meant a 17.43 percent increase when compared with the same month a year earlier.

Regarding exports, the sector shipped 2,273,732 units to other countries in 2015, which meant an 11.46 percent rise when compared with a year earlier. Meanwhile, in December a total of 153,095 vehicles were exported to other countries, 12.69 percent more than in the same month in 2014.

ANFAC said that the rise was caused by improvements in exports to Asian countries, especially South Korea and China, rises in exports to the United States and Turkey and an improvement in the market of the European Union countries.

The sector aims at producing 3 million vehicles in 2017, a figure that reached in 2000, 2003 and 2004. ANFAC shows optimism about the figures released on Wednesday and expects to consolidate the rise in production and increase it in the coming years.
