Madrid: In October 2015, the Canary Islands shipped 31,405 tonnes of bananas to the Spanish mainland, while African and Latin American exports amounted to 24,261 tonnes and re-exports reached 6,556 tonnes, so consumers in Spain had access to about 49,111 tonnes of bananas. This is 17,632 tonnes more than in the previous month, which means that the available supply grew by 56%; a normal development, given that average consumption increases after the summer. With these figures, the market share of imported bananas has fluctuated between a minimum of 36% and a maximum of 49%.
Over the first ten months of the year, the Canary Islands shipped 290,847 tonnes, imports from Africa and Latin America amounted to 183,388 tonnes and re-exports reached 60,132 tonnes, so Spanish consumers had access to some 414,103 tonnes. This is 5,012 tonnes more than the previous year, representing an increase in the available supply of 1.2%. With these figures, the market share of imported bananas during this period ranged from a minimum of 30% to a maximum of 44%.
The main suppliers of imported bananas in October were Costa Rica, with 5,236 tonnes, Colombia, with 4,070 tonnes, and Ivory Coast and Mexico, with 3,870 and 3,509 tonnes. These four countries accounted for 69% of the volume. Meanwhile, Ivory Coast, with 4.0 million Euro, Cameroon with 2.4 million Euro, and Costa Rica and Colombia also, with 2.4 and 2.1 million Euro, were the main suppliers in terms of value, totalling more than 69% of the total.
