PERTH: The Peacock Spider, a colorful species of spider with bright colors and peacock-like behavior has been around for some time, but two new species have just been discovered by a student visiting Australia.
Madeleine Gidard from the University of California Berkeley, is particularly interested in studying peacock spiders and made the discoveries during a study field trip with a friend.
She has since nicknamed one of the species, Sparklemuffin (Maratus Jactatus), for its vibrant bluish and reddish stripes. The other species she named Skeletorus (Maratus Sceletus), because according to her it looks much like a skeleton with its black and white markings.
Speaking on the matter, Jurgen Otto, an entomologist with an affinity for photographing arachnids, co-authored a report titled ‘Incredible Photos of Peacock Spiders’. He says that these new species look so much different from the previous Peacock Spider species that there might still be many more different species of the Peacock Spider that are yet to be discovered.
