COLOMBO: Sri Lanka Customs officials have arrested a Sri Lankan national this morning at the Departure Lounge of the Colombo International Airport in Katunayake for attempting to smuggle out foreign currency worth over Rs 6 million.
According to the Customs officials, the 39-year-old male, who arrived at the airport this morning to board a flight to Dubai via Qatar by Qatar Airways flight QR 669, has aroused suspicion and upon search the foreign currency was found.
The suspect had undeclared foreign currency, estimated to be valued at Rs. 6,362,746, hidden in his traveling bag.
The concealed money according to the Customs officials included US$ 45,420, UAE Dirham 5,225 and Rs 19,000.
The man has been handed over to the Customs Investigation Department for further inquiry.
