Sri Lanka Navy seizes 200kg ganja

COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested four Rameswaram fishermen on charges of drug trafficking and confiscated their country boat and about 200 kg of ganja here the other day

Reports received here said that the four fishermen, identified as Murugavel, Nambuvel, Muthukumar and Umayaraj, all in their twenties, had set out for “fishing” at the early hours on Monday from Muhuntharayar Chathiram in Dhanushkodi when the Lankan Navy from Mannar arrested them on the high seas.

The fishermen, who were sailing in a double engine country boat, bearing registration Number TN 909 CVW 805, tried to escape, but the Lankan Navy chased and arrested them on the high seas, the reports said.

‘Q’ Branch police here said the fishermen carried about 200 kg of ganja and threw at least 20 bundles in the sea when they were chased. The Navy, however, managed to recover about 76 kg and confiscated the boat, the sources said.
