Sri Lanka: Sirisena orders action against gold smuggling

COLOMBO: A special discussion on the topic of preventing the gold smuggling, was held Tuesday under the patronage of Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena at the Presidential Secretariat.

The Tri Forces and the Police have revealed that the gold purchased at the auctions held by the State and private banks are being exported from Sri Lanka in a mega scale in illegal ways.

After holding detailed discussionss, Sirisena ordered to take immediate action and effective steps to prevent this smuggling.

Sirisena also advised the Central Bank as well as the State and private banks to prepare systematized documentation on the auctions the respective banks held and a decision was taken to implement a legal, practical program to prevent gold smuggling with the participation of Attorney-General’s Department, Tri Forces and the Police.

Heads of the Ministry of Finance and Treasury, officials of the Tri Forces and the Police, officers of the Attorney-General’s Department, as well as the State and private banks participated in the discussion.
