COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court has decided to hear a case filed by a legislator over the imposition of value added tax without parliamentary consent, media reports said.
Wimal Weerawasnsa, an opposition legislator, had petitioned the Supreme Court in a landmark case against the Sri Lanka government’s habit of imposing taxes without parliamentary consent.
Courts usually do not hear tax case, as it is the function of the legislature.
Sri Lanka raised value added tax to 15 percent from 11 percent and also imposed the tax on healthcare.
