COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s tax payers will provide a 200,000 insurance cover to 4.5 million school kids in the country, the finance ministry said, with 2.7 billion rupees being forked out in 2017.
Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake was quoted as saying that each child will be given a policy certificate for 200,000 rupees. Kids could get in-patient claims of 100,000 rupees and outpatient claims of 10,000 rupees. The finance ministry said 2,700 billion rupees had allocated from 2017 tax collections for insurance.
It was not specified whether this amount was an insurance premium to be paid out to providers or whether the sum was advance payment for another contingent liability placed on tax payers.
