COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s state-run Lanka Fertilizer Colombo Commercial Fertilizer Company Ltd, will distribute 18,000 metric tonnes of urea and 3,000 metric tonnes of triple super phosphate imported by the ministry of agriculture. The cabinet of ministers had given the nod for a proposal by agriculture Minister Duminda Disanayake to import the stocks of fertilizer, the state information office said. They will be bought from Quantum Fertilizers Ltd and Hiyork Holdings Ltd.
Sri Lanka’s main Maha cultivation season begins this month. Sri Lanka has seen two rice crops fail amid drought and reservoir levels are low. Last month the state agricultural department issued a notice for farmers to cultivate short maturing crops. Though normal rains are expected this year, reservoir levels are depleted. There has been heavy rains in the wet zone in Western and Southweestern Sri Lanka leading to flooding.
