COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s Finance Ministry says that Vehicle Lanka Pvt Ltd was given permission to engage in assembling of vehicles using spare parts on legal advice from the Attorney General. Eight containers containing used vehicle parts released from the Sri lanka Customs to its consignee who is engaged in vehicle assembling was based on a decision made by the cabinet of ministers on legal advice given by the Attorney General, a Finance Ministry statement said.
The Company now comes under the purview of the Ministry of Finance and in October 2016 a paper was submitted to the cabinet of ministers for its consideration. Vehicle Lanka pvt Ltd commenced operations after 2005 and encountered legal barriers with over 20 court cases and fundamental right applications in the Supreme Court. One of the Fundamental Right cases filed in 2012 has been amicably settled with Transport Ministry and the company given permission by the then Commissioner of Motor Traffic to engage in vehicle assembling. Following the Supreme Court decision the Cabinet appointed a sub- committee under the chairmanship of Minister of Transport, Nimal Siripala de Silva and then after having considered the legal opinion from the Attorney General decided to give three year concession to the company to engage in vehicle assembling business on the condition of withdrawing all the pending court cases.
