LONDON: It just happened in the making of the SRT Tomahawk Vision Gran Turismo, a wholly digital creation by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles for the Gran Turismo 6 video game.

The car was envisioned as one that would dominate a virtual race track. As conceived, it has a hybrid power-plant combining electric motors with a V-10 engine. It would develop a 2,590 horsepower.

Just about every designer from interns to design veterans answered the call for the in-house competition to come up with an entry. Paul Hoste, a designer in the Jeep brand studio, was the winner.

“It was very exciting around the studio,” Hoste said in an interview. “It was one of those projects where we all had to put in work on nights and weekends if we wanted to participate.” The result, he says, was “hundreds” of entries.

His single-seat supercar won the heart of design chief Ralph Gilles with its aggressive, in-your-face looks and fantasy hybrid powertrain. Players will be able to get to choose from three different versions of the car.

“I think it was just an incredible opportunity to be creative, just do whatever you want and go nuts with creativity,” Hoste says. “It was basically limitless.”

The creators of the game say they are pleased with the result. They say Hoste’s creation captured the spirit of the game.

“I’m truly happy that FCA and its performance division, SRT, have captured the spirit of the Vision Gran Turismo with the SRT Tomahawk Vision Gran Turismo,” says Kazunori Yamauchi, president of Polyphony Digital, in a statement.
