KARACHI: Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rai Ijaz, who was arrested last week on corruption charges, was on Tuesday remanded into the custody of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for 10 days.

NAB’s Karachi branch had arrested the senior police officer on November 30 after the bureau’s Lahore office issued an arrest warrant against him. He has been accused of causing losses of Rs700 million to the national exchequer.

Ijaz was presented before an accountability court in Lahore for a hearing today. NAB requested the court for approving the physical remand of the suspect for 15 days.

The prosecution alleged that the SSP had embezzled funds between 2014 and 2016 whilst serving as the district police officer in Gujrat. It said that this was done through misappropriating funds allotted for uniforms and fuel.

In his defence, SSP Ijaz said that the anti-corruption department had completed its investigation into the NAB case and submitted its findings, which show no evidence of corruption on his part.

“No corruption has been proven in the anti-corruption [department’s] report,” he asserted, insisting that “my record is clean”.

“Now a media trial is being conducted with false accusations of Rs700 million corruption,” he claimed.

The SSP maintained that his arrest was in contravention to the law.
