Steel exports increased while imports decreased YoY in Jan-Oct

ISTANBUL: Turkish steel product imports grew in year-on-year terms in October, while exports inched down, reported Turkish Steel Producers’ Association (TCUD).

Turkish steel exports in October slided -0.6% y-o-y to 1.41mt but their total value increased 22.8% to USD1.14 billion. In September, the country’s steel exports decreased by -14.3% y-o-y. October’s flats exports fell -3.6% y-o-y to 286,000t and longs’ shipments declined -10.8% to 724,000t as local producers focused on meeting domestic demand, TCUD explains. Semis exports grew notably to 61,000t from 14,000t a year earlier.

October’s steel imports totalled 1.66 mln tons, up 32.8% y-o-y, after a 22.1% increase the month before. Flat steel procurement grew 37.3% y-o-y to 860,000t, longs imports rose 9.4% to 138,000t and semi product intake increased 30.7% to 543,000t, the association says in a statement.

In January-October, Turkey’s steel imports decreased -10.7% y-o-y to 13.5mt as semis intake declined -28.3% to 3.9mt and flats imports rose 2.4% to 7.5mt.

Ten-month steel exports from Turkey rose 7.3% y-o-y to 14.9mt and their total value grew 21.8% to USD10.7 billion. Longs exports decreased -11.2% to 7.5mt, but flats shipments surged 47.6% to 3.5mt and semis exports soared 299% to 725,000t. Pipe exports rose 8.3% to 1.5mt.
