Supercop Javed Akbar Riaz takes charge as Karachi DG NAB

KARACHI: Javed Akbar Riaz has assumed office as Director General of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Karachi.

The federal government has recently appointed Javed Akbar Riaz, a BS-20 officer of the Police Service as Director General (BS-21) of the national anti-graft watchdog. He was earlier serving in the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). According to a notification by the Establishment Division, he was placed at the disposal of the NAB for posting as DG under Section 10 of the Civil Servants Act, 1973. He has been appointed DG on a deputation basis for an initial period of three years on standard terms and conditions.

During his service in the FIA, Javed Akbar Riaz worked tirelessly to eradicate human trafficking, illegal transfer of money through Hawala/Hundi, and money laundering. He also encouraged police to take action against child labour, crimes against women and other social evils. From start of August 2020, he served as Karachi DIG Karachi South. It was a difficult time for law and order situation but he was able to deal with the challenge and curb the crime rate. Resultantly, the Business community was able to get relief and was happy throughout his tenure.

The NAB Chairman also approved postings/transfers of one DG and three Directors who were serving in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and the federal capital and a notification of their postings/transfers was also issued.

The NAB Chairman approved postings/transfer of Brig (r) Farooq Naser Awan, DG from NAB Peshawar (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) to NAB Headquarter (HQ), Islamabad, on an attachment basis for special assignments. Awan was appointed the Karachi NAB DG in November 2018. The Bureau performed excellently during his tenure. The NAB Karachi received 10,561 complaints in 2018, 11,381 in 2019 and 6,483 in 2020. All complaints were disposed of and no complaint was pending. NAB Karachi filed 46 references in 2018, 28 in 2019 and 30 in 2020. Earlier, he served as chief of staff and NAB Headquarters DG from 2013 to 2016. In 2016, he was appointed as NAB Multan DG, where he served for about one year. In 2017, he was posted as NAB Peshawar director general, where he served for one year and one month time period. Farooq Awan is regarded as a hard working and experienced official.

The NAB Chairman also transferred Nauman Aslam, Director (BS-20), as NAB Balochistan DG in own pay and scale to NAB Peshawar (KP) as Director and he will also look after work of the post of DG, NAB (KP), till further orders while he shall exercise all the powers delegated to the DG. Likewise, Zafar Iqbal Khan, Director NAB (HQ) Islamabad, is transferred and made DG, NAB Balochistan, in own pay and scale. Moreover, Izhar Ahmed Awan, Director, NAB (KP) Peshawar, is transferred to NAB (HQ), Islamabad.

Business community members like Junaid Abdul kader, Chairman, Maxim’s Group of Companies, Afzaal Adhia Chief Executive Bombay light House, Muhammad Akbar General Secretary Automotive Traders & Importers Associations Karachi, Furqan Abdul Kader Group Director Universal Brothers Pvt. Ltd. and similarly other business community names were all praise for Mr. Javed Akbar Riaz for his professionalism, merit, outstanding performance and relief to the business community.
