Suzuki unveils iM-4 concept at Geneva, likely to release new Jimny

GENEVA: Suzuki has released the iM-4 at the Geneva Motor Show, which was teased last month. The iM-4 is heavily tipped to preview the next Jimny 4WD; replacing a model that has been around in one form or another in Australia for over 16 years.

Suzuki goes as far as to say that the iM-4 is an “iconic mini 4×4”, as the carmaker’s “vision for a new compact 4×4 that embodies [Suzuki 4WD] DNA while bristling with the latest technology”.

Fuel consumption is a major focus for the iM-4, which features a 1.2 litre petrol engine matched with a ‘mild hybrid’ system.

An integrated starter generator (ISG) works together with a regenerative braking system, recouping energy for the car’s lithium-ion battery pack.

Suzuki says a minimalist design also helps to keep fuel usage down, but the concept is still a tough and reliable 4WD.

High ground clearance, a high hip-point and a new-generation platform ensure the small car is still at home off road, while also offering increased rigidity and reduced weight for better safety, handing and stability.

At 3,693mm long and 1,709mm wide the iM-4 is 18mm longer and 109mm wider than the current Jimny, but the height is 139mm less at 1,566mm. The wheelbase is 2,438mm and wheel diameter is 18-inch.

The Jimny made its return to the Australian market last year as a refreshed model following a forced stint on the sideline due a lack of standard electronic stability control (ESC).

Upon promising a replacement, Suzuki also reportedly promised that the new Jimny would not become a ‘soft-roader’.
