SYLHET: Sylhet customs and immigration police found 80 gold bars, weighing 9.3kg and worth Tk 6 crore, under a seat of an aircraft of Biman Bangladesh Airlines at Sylhet MAG Osmani International Airport yesterday.
On information, police searched a flight of Bangladesh Biman (BG-228) and found the gold bars, wrapped in a paper, inside four bags which were hidden under the seat, said Sajjad Hossain, assistant commissioner of Sylhet customs. The flight, from United Arab Emirates, was moving to Dhaka after a break at Sylhet, he said.
Commissioner of Sylhet customs Shafiqul Islam, at a press conference, claimed that this is the highest amount of smuggled gold recovered in Sylhet airport. Smugglers were trying to smuggle the gold through Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The security of Sylhet airport will be tightened to stop all kinds of smuggling through the airport, he added.
