Syria to export 700,000 tons of citrus fruit to Russia

DAMASCUS: The head of Syria’s Chambers of Industry says the country will export more than 700,000 tons of citrus fruit to Russia after Moscow banned imports of Turkish agricultural products.

Fares Chehabi said on December 8 that the first shipment has already left for Russia.

He said other Syrian goods, such as textile products, would also be sent to Russia.

Meanwhile, the head of the Damascus Chamber of Industry, Samer Debes, said Syrian businessmen were preparing for a trip to Moscow to “examine the chances of cooperation after the sanctions that Moscow imposed on Ankara.”

These sanctions “create an important gap and suddenly a real opportunity for Syrian products,” Debes said.

Russia imposed economic sanctions on Turkey last month after the Turkish military downed a Russian bomber on the Syrian border, triggering a bitter row between Moscow and Ankara.
