HONG KONG: A tiny vegetarian dinosaur the size of a turkey that roamed South America 145 million years ago has been named after a seven-year-old boy who discovered it while playing with his sister.
It was a relative of the T-Rex, but much less scary as it preferred plants to prey. The new species is being referred to as a “platypus” dinosaur because of its bizarre combination of features that include short arms, a long neck, small head and leaf-shaped teeth.
It had hands with two fingers, like T-Rex, and feet more akin to primitive long-neck dinosaurs. The platypus – a mix of duck, beaver and otter – is among nature’s most unlikely animals. In fact. the first scientists to examine a specimen believed they were the victims of a hoax.
Chilesaurus diegosuarezi grew up to ten feet long and was a member of the theropods, which include the famous meat eaters Velociraptor and Tyrannosaurus, and from which birds today evolved.
The presence of herbivorous theropods was until now only known in close relatives of birds, but Chilesaurus shows a meat-free diet was acquired much earlier than thought.
