CARDIFF: A police team set up only a year ago has seized almost £1m worth of assets from organised criminals in south, mid and west.
The newly-formed Asset Confiscation Enforcement (ACE) team is part of the organised crime unit, Tarian.
It is made up of police officers and staff seconded from the Dyfed-Powys, Gwent and South Wales forces.
Half of the money taken from criminals is reinvested in anti-crime schemes and community projects.
It comes as a A report into the regional organised crime units in England and Wales praised their “effective and efficient” work against some of the country’s “most dangerous and serious” offenders.
But Her Majesty’s Inspector of Constabulary (HMIC), which published the report, said they must increase collaboration with each other and be more consistent in how they work with their police forces.
Tarian was launched in 2003 and its priorities include areas such as drugs, modern slavery, cyber crime and child sexual exploitation.
South Wales Police’s ACC Nikki Holland said: “The entire Tarian family should be proud of the effective investigative work we have undertaken in the past 12 months – and it is rewarding that the HMIC recognise this commitment to safeguarding the communities of southern Wales.”
