Tax evasion: Custom Court grants interim pre-arrest bail to suspect

KARACHI: Custom Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has granted interim pre-arrest bail to a suspect, Sharafatullah son of Attaullah. The suspect was booked in a duty and taxes evasion case.

During the hearing, counsel for the suspect filed an application for interim pre-arrest bail and argued that the accused is innocent and was falsely implicated in this case, and that he is also ready to face trail. Therefore, the court may grant him bail till the final disposal of this case.

After the arguments, the court granted ad-interim bail to the suspect against surety bonds of Rs 200,000. The court also issued notice to the special prosecutor of the Custom Department and called police papers. The accused was directed to appear before the court on February 10, 2017.

According to the prosecution, during the investigation it was revealed that importer in connivance with clearing agent and other accomplices submitted forged and fabricated certificates for old and used machinery and other good/ scrap which resulted in the losses of duty and taxes amounting to Rs 1.02 million.

Therefore, case was registered by Model Custom Collectorate Appraisement West, Custom House Karachi in violation of under section 32 (1) 32(1) 79 & 192 of the customs act 1969, punishable under section 14, 45 & 86 of the Custom Act 1969.
