Tax evasion: Customs court submits progress report against M/s Union Enterprise

KARACHI: The Customs Court approved a progress report against Akhtar Jameel Rehmani, owner of M/s Union Enterprises, who was nominated in the first information report (FIR) for evasion of duty and taxes to the tune of Rs208, 660, 526.2.

On 24 March 2021, Investigation officer of Customs Export Port Muhammad Bin Qasim Karachi submitted progress report and informed that a credible information was received by Customs Export Port Muhammad Bin Qasim, Karachi that in Export Processing Zone, Karachi namely M/s Union Enterprise is involved in smuggling of exported goods into tariff area without payment of duties and taxes, in order to confirm the information, the Collectorate undertook the audit of the unit for the last calendar 2020 and immediately reached the premises of manufacturing unit on Dec 05, 2020 which was found locked from inside and it was reliable leant that the unit was out of manufacturing operation for last many months.

He further submitted that during the investigation, it was revealed that the investor has exported abroad certain goods garment gowns, jeans garments, disposable table cover, disposable gowns, men’s T-shirts and hoodies total weighing 10, 780 kg but these goods are not made up from the goods imported in last calendar year 2020.

He argued that during the investigation, it has been established that the investigation of M/s Union Enterprises has smuggled a huge quantity of the imported high value goods to the tariff area causing huge loss to national exchequer from its legitimate revenue amounting to Rs. 208, 660, 526.2.

After the hearing, the court has taken progress reports and directed the investigation officer to complete the investigation and submit a final progress report for the next date of hearing.
