Technical malfunctions, oil unavailability at power plants costing billions to national exchequer

ISLAMABAD: The national exchequer is incurring losses of billions of rupees due to technical faults in power plants and unavailability of fuel. Nepra report on the malfunction of the newly laid Matiari transmission lines has exposed the incompetence of the power sector.

According to Nepra documents, the 147-megawatt Guddu power plant is facing closure since August 2022 due to technical faults, whereas Guddu 747 is operating on an open cycle with an efficiency of only 29%.

As per the documents, despite Haveli Bahadur Shah is performing better than Baloki power plant, it is not producing electricity at its full capacity. National exchequer has suffered a loss of Rs.3.46 billion due to inefficiency of Haveli Bahadur Shah and Baloki power plants.

It has also been revealed that the menace of load shedding could have been controlled if these power plants were operational, Even the newly laid Matiari transmission line is facing problems arose.The malfunction in the transmission lines led to disruptions in power transmission from the Thar coal power plants, resulting in a loss of Rs.556 million in just one month.

It would be worthwhile to know that some transmission lines passing from Matiari were laid under CPEC projects and faced quality assurance delays on which a report was issued as well.
