TEHRAN: Tehran and Ankara will use their national currencies in their trade exchanges, the Head of Iran-Turkey Joint Trade Council, Jalal Ebrahimi said.
Ebrahimi said that the idea was raised during the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s recent trip to Tehran.
Ebrahimi said Iran and Turkey will make payments in their national currencies equivalent to the dollar or the euro.
He said this was part of a package of proposals to facilitate trade between the two countries. Another solution, he said, was barter trade between the two countries.
Iran and Turkey have been pursuing increasing widening of their ties in various fields in the last two decades. Iran is a main energy supplier to Turkey and Ankara has made huge investments in Iran.
Iran is a main destination of Turkish goods and Turkey is among the top destinations of Iranian tourists and traders.
The two states plan to multiply their trade transactions in the next few years.
