KARACHI: The Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) has thrown open tenders to import 100,000 metric tons of sugar in a bid to meet growing demand and keep prices in check.

On the special directions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the entire process was aired live on state television to make sure everything was above board. Representatives of five companies turned up for the tender-opening ceremony, which was also attended by observers from Transparency International.

The decision to import sugar through TCP was made earlier to plug the supply gap and stabilize the market. On August 21, TCP had already opened tenders for 200,000 metric tons of sugar.

Officials say the new imports will help meet local demand and stop prices from spiraling out of control.
