MEXICO CITY: Texas Governor Greg Abbott is off to Mexico, where he will be working to strengthen trade and border security.
“We are looking for great economic opportunities in our dealings with Mexico as well as addressing our common concern about the border and cartel based challenges,” Governor Abbott said.
Accompanied by some of the state’s top business leaders, Governor Abbott will meet with Mexico’s President in Mexico City.
The state’s largest export market, Mexico buys more than $100 billion of goods from Texas companies a year. Abbott said economic development is the key driver of his trip and he wants to find ways to expand business with the state’s top trade partner.
This Mexico trip comes as the 2016 presidential race has spotlighted issues between the two neighbors, shaking a valuable relationship.
“Texans and I think Americans are frustrated,” Governor Abbott said the U.S. border and its immigration system are broken.
“We are spending now almost a billion dollars for border security but this is something that the state of Texas alone cannot shoulder,” Abbott said.
Texas and Mexico will be working together to tighten up security for people on both sides of the border. Governor Abbott said, “Frankly these are challenges that Mexico shares, Mexico shares the challenge of dealing with cartel-based crime,” Abbott said.
Texas is teaming up with their neighbor but Governor Abbott said the state needs the Federal Government to step in.
Abbott said the Feds need to do three things, reform the immigration system, fix the border and then pay up. Governor Abbott said, “they need to reimburse the state of Texas and our citizens for the money we’ve come out of pocket to pay for the federal government’s failure to do its own job.”
Beyond trade and common challengers at the border, Abbott said Texas and Mexico share an important cultural bond. Abbott said both sides share a vision that will benefit the economies and families and Mexico and Texas.
