BANGKOK: Two suspected drug mules who flew into Bangkok on a flight from Manila were arrested after their luggage yielded 2.6 kilos of high grade cocaine – stuff that one of them said she was asked by her African boyfriend to convey.
Thai Customs officers presented in a press conference two Thai women, Siriwan Yodteerak, 32, and Aaew Wijit, 34, after their arrest last Sunday.
Siriwan arrived at Krabi Airport (Thailand) from Manila on Sunday on an Air Asia flight from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3.
A Thai customs baggage inspector at Krabi airport became suspicious of certain objects in a suitcase during a routine profiling; upon closer inspection, the bag yielded drugs hidden in a secret compartment.
During questioning, the suspected drug courier reportedly confessed that she had been paid some 60,000 baht by her African boyfriend to transport the luggage to Thailand.
Aaew was arrested later at a local hotel where she was waiting for the suitcase containing drugs to arrive.
The two have been charged with various drug-related charges including possessing with intent to sell them and smuggling. Thai police are now hunting the unnamed African national who is behind the smuggling attempts.
