Thai Customs seize ivory and pangolin scales at Suvarnabhumi airport

BANGKOK: Thai customs authority seized 39 pieces of ivory weighing about 116kg, along with 15kg of pangolin scales at the Suvarnabhumi Airport here last Tuesday.

According to its director general, Kulit Sombatsiri, the shipment, which was declared as fish product, came from Congo using Turkish Airlines destined for Thailand.

The total value of the shipment was about 11 million Baht (RM1.37 million), he said.

Sombatsiri saidThailand had seized 510 pieces of ivory, 136 pangolins and more than 4 tonnes of its highly-prized scales, 49 rhino horns, 236 turtles and other exotic animals worth about 350 million Baht (RM43.7 million), so far this year.
