BANGKOK: Thai police has said they are seeking two Americans after infant and adult body parts, stolen from a medical museum, were found in five parcels destined for the United States.
The two men, aged 31 and 33, crossed into neighbouring Cambodia soon after the gruesome discovery, which was made during a routine scan of packages at a DHL package depot in Bangkok.
The boxes contained a baby’s left foot, a baby’s head and a baby’s heart, as well as pieces of skin tattooed with Khmer letters and tiger patterns, deputy national police chief Ruangsak Jritake said.
The packages were addressed to Las Vegas in Nevada, prompting Thai police to ask the FBI for help to check the destination, deputy police chief Jritake told.
Doctors at Bangkok’s Siriraj Hospital said the body parts were taken from the hospital’s Medical Museum, nicknamed the Museum of Death, which exhibits preserved human remains, many of them from murder victims.
Udom Kachintorn, dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Siriraj Hospital, confirmed the two Americans visited the museum last month.
Police have asked the two men to come back “for further investigation” over breaching customs laws, deputy police chief Ruangsak said.
In 2012, Thai police arrested a British citizen of Taiwanese origin after discovering six human fetuses which had been roasted and covered in gold leaf stuffed into travel bags at a hotel room in Bangkok’s Chinatown.
