BANGKOK: Authorities seized 100 phayung logs (Siamese rosewood) worth about 7 million baht left in a forest in Si Sa Ket’s Khun Han district here the other day.
A combined team of police, soldiers and forestry officials went to Jawae forest in Khun Han district and found many phayung logs, about 1.5-2 metres long, left in the area around 2.30pm on Sunday.
The log poachers managed to flee before officers arrived.
The seizure of the logs followed an investigation which revealed a gang of poachers had illegally felled phayung trees in the forest and were about to smuggle them out, Thai media reported.
Authorities said the logs, numbering 100, could fetch up to 7 million baht if sold.
Theppitak Muensawan, assistant chief of Khun Han district, said Jawae forest, located near the Thai-Cambodian border, was abundant with phayung trees. Log poachers normally cut trees at night and sell the logs to timber exporters, Manager Online reported.
