BANGKOK: Customs officers have seized counterfeit and untaxed products and banned items worth about 20 million baht in Hat Yai district of Songkhla and Phuket.

The seizures followed searches by customs officers and soldiers in three locations in Songkhla province, including the Hat Yai post office, bus terminal and railway station, as well as a private company providing postal services in Phuket.

The items, worth about 20 million baht, included 167 electronic baraku cigarettes, 4,976 bottles of cough syrup, 10,880 Zolam tranquiliser tablets and more than 6,000 pieces of fake brand-name clothing, watches, shoes, bags and accessories, Sakdipat Rungruang, director of the Customs Office Region 4’s customs control unit said during a media briefing on Friday.

Mr Sakdispat said his office and soldiers would continue the operation to crack down on contraband, particularly during the lead-up to the New Year’s holiday, as untaxed products were in high demand.

Authorities would also stem the influx of cough syrup and other narcotic substances into the deep South, he added.
